Matt Hansen is a writer, editor and consultant whose primary focus is on skiing and fly fishing.

A professional journalist since 1998, Matt has been an award-winning newspaper reporter, freelance writer, and staff editor at two magazines, including Paddler Magazine and Powder Magazine, where he has been since 2004.

Born and raised in Salt Lake City, where he obtained a journalism degree from the University of Utah, Matt’s experience has taught him the invaluable lessons of working the pavement—or snow or river—to get the best story. While many writers rely on digital technology to tell their stories, Matt recognizes the importance of human-to-human interaction, honesty and fairness, respect for his audience, and keen observation. From 2004 to 2011, Matt was a staff editor at Powder Magazine, where he developed a reputation for taking on difficult stories: from hitchhiking across Colorado and sleeping on floors, couches and hostels, to the heartache left behind by avalanche victims, and how 2008’s real estate crash impacted skiing. Assignments have taken him to Alaska, Japan, Cuba, Panama, Chile, the Republic of Georgia, numerous trips to the Alps, and all of western North America. While most of his writing is shaped by the natural environment, Matt’s inspiration comes from the everyday people who sacrifice in order to make it work in the mountains.

Matt is currently Editor-at-Large for Powder, and lives in Jackson, Wyoming, with his wife and a mini Australian Shepherd named Ted.
